The VA Portal is a dedicated platform provided by Vibrant America to healthcare providers, offering a seamless and efficient experience for managing patient test information. The platform requires registration and verification of healthcare providers' qualifications to ensure secure access to sensitive patient data. With a comprehensive repository of educational resources, test reports, and test scheduling capabilities, the VA Portal streamlines the process of ordering tests, accessing results, and scheduling blood draw (mobile or draw site) for patients. This innovative portal empowers healthcare providers to offer personalized and timely testing solutions, catering to the diverse needs of each patient, all within a unified and user-friendly platform.

The objective of this project is to redesign and develop a patient test page that caters to healthcare professionals, providing them with an efficient tool to manage patient test information. The page should accommodate multiple patients, each having different tests, and offer easy access to order information, test report status, report details, navigator note, and relevant featured links. The goal is to create an intuitive and user-friendly interface that enhances the workflow of healthcare professionals and enables them to make data-driven decisions for better patient care.

Pain point

Most of the test reports available in the market are designed primarily for healthcare providers and can be difficult for patients to understand. However, we recognize that patients have a right to understand the results of their tests and to be informed about their health in a way that is clear and accessible.

To address this issue, we have developed an interactive report that is specifically designed for patients, with a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate and understand. The report presents the results of each test in a clear and concise manner, using graphics and plain language to help patients understand their results.

Goal

Our goal with this report is to empower patients to take an active role in managing their health, by providing them with clear and understandable information about their test results and actionable recommendations for improving their health. By doing so, we believe that we can help to improve patient outcomes and ultimately contribute to a healthier and more informed population.

User Flow

My main focus was on designing the patient page and patient profile page. Our other team members will be responsible for designing the remaining pages.

Patient Page
Before/After

Objective

The objective of the Patients page is to view all types of information about each provider’s patients.
There are two tabs that exist on the Patient page: Tests Ordered/ Drafts

Success metrics

Goal: Provide users with a better way to access information about their patients

Metric: Positive feedbacks from current users. Increase user retention rate

What We Introduced:

In terms of the patient page, we've completely revamped the filter section. Patients now have an enhanced filtering experience with the ability to apply various filters. These filters include sorting by issue type, order status, kit status, report status, and service date.

The Patient page serves as a comprehensive hub where users can access a wide array of patient-related information. This includes details about orders, accession IDs, order summaries, and more.

This page is also where the users can view the status of each test orders: order status, kit status, report status. The users can also Download reports, order summary, and requisitions by clicking on any of the available check boxes on the page.
In addition, they can access Order Test and Pay Bill from this page to have easy access to ordering tests or paying bills. If there is a Test Not Performed (TNP) order, the users are able to Request Redraw. When an order has an issue, it will be indicated on the order (see - Issue Types). Users can perform functions that they can do in the Patient Profile page in the Patient page through the Action Menu (see - Action Menu).

Patient Profile Page
Before/After

Objective

The objective of the Patient Profile page is to have detailed information about the patient’s information, test orders, test results and reports, order and report status, and test results (completed, in progress, or Test Not Performed (TNP)).

Success metrics

Goal: Provide users with detailed overview of all test orders and results about the patient

Metric: Positive feedbacks from current users. Increase user retention rate

Test information: The Test Report tab contains shareable, viewable, or customizable reports. The users can also view the report status and questionnaire results. Most importantly, if the patient has tests performed, the users are able to see it under Completed, In Progress, or Test Not Performed. The results of the patient's test will be outlined in detail under these.

Regarding the test report segment, completed reports now feature informative charts that categorize results into high-risk, moderate, and normal ranges. This modification simplifies the process of identifying high-risk or any reports you want to see.

What We Introduced:

In our patient page redesign, we strategically relocated the patient's personal information and service date to the left-hand side. The patient information contains: patient name, DOB, age, telephone number, email, address, and gender. Below the patient information, the users can view a history log of all orders for the patient for the current year. The user may click on any of the orders to view more information about them as the following three tabs will change according to the specific order selected.

We have meticulously categorized the content into four well-defined sections: Order Information, Test Reports, Navigation Notes, and Featured Links. This new arrangement significantly enhances the overall user journey, as it provides clear separation and more straightforward navigation to various aspects of the patient's experience.

Order Information: Within the Order Information section, we now present the order status, specific test details (including the tests ordered), kit information (indicating kit shipping and status), and the timestamp for the collection of all tubes.

Navigator Notes: The Navigator Notes serve as comments where providers can offer suggestions or advice for patients.

Featured links: The Featured Links tab is a summary of all the possible actions that can be performed for the patient, such as: ordering, viewing order summary, creating reports, viewing internal notes, or sharing patient portal access to the patient.

What I've learned

Redesigning a project doesn't entail creating something entirely novel; it's essential to bear in mind that the existing design is already in use, and users might have established habits.

The most challenging aspect of revamping this portal is determining the multitude of functions it encompasses. It's crucial to discern which functions remain in use and which ones could be considered for removal. Additionally, a comprehensive understanding of the connections between this portal and other platforms is necessary for a successful redesign.
